ADSL FAQ
Fixed internet perfect for the home or office
What is ADSL?
ADSL is fast, always-on broadband internet that connects using a fixed telephone line.
What do I need to get started?
- A desktop or laptop computer
- An existing Telkom phone line
- An existing ADSL line
- An iBurst ADSL package
- An ADSL modem or router (entry level modem/router included on selected 24-month contracts)
Can I use my telephone line and access the internet at the same time?
Yes. ADSL technology splits your existing phone line into two channels. One channel handles voice
communication while the other channel is used for high-speed internet access. This allows you to enjoy fast,
always-on Internet, and still make voice calls on the same line!
How do I know if ADSL is right for me?
- Need fast internet: With iBurst ADSL you will get speeds greater than 1 Mbps
- Stability verses portability: ADSL uses existing telephone lines to give you a stable connection
- Does your unused data go to waste? With iBurst ADSL, you can simply carry it over to the next month
- Need an option that suits your specific usage needs: ADSL gives you the option of shaped, unshaped or local-only bandwidth
- Need a connection that allows users access at different locations: With iBurst ADSL you can have up to 4 simultaneous logins with one username
What is shaped ADSL?
The Shaped service prioritises and speeds up activities such as surfing the internet, doing your banking or checking your e-mail - things you are physically doing on your computer. We recommend this option for general internet use.
What is unshaped ADSL?
The Unshaped service is used for activities you are leaving your PC to do while you're not there. It's designed for more specialised internet use, such as forex trading and specific gaming applications.
What is Local only ADSL?
The Local only service is used when you require access to sites which are hosted in South Africa only (although these may be .co.za; .com or any other domains).
What happens when I reach my monthly data limit?
You have 3 options:
- All packages are activated with Pay-Per-use, which means that once you have used your bundle you will automatically be billed per MB thereafter
- Top up your bandwidth with a Bandwidth Booster. These allow you to buy bundles of extra bandwidth for less.
- You have the option to opt out of Pay-per-use, this means that your data will be capped unless you buy a Bandwidth Booster
